The Robinson Institute

Glaisdale Womens' Institute is a group of around 40 who meet monthly to hear interesting speakers and organise outings through the year with the emphasis on enjoyment. The group is varied in terms of age, background and time spent in the village and this makes for a wide range of interests.

We love to socialise together and organise regular outings and in addition to our monthly meeting, have a regular pub evening and some sub groups. We also have an annual outing instead of an August meeting.
We have 2 trophies to award for handicrafts and monthly competitions: the Mary Lonsdale trophy, awarded biennially for produce or handicrafts; and one for the monthly competitions.
We have an active group of walkers who meet monthly, a zentangle group meeting on an ad hoc basis and our December meeting is the Christmas party which is a meal and entertainment.
2018 saw our 90th birthday and we planned some special events to celebrate! We started with a festive meal in Whitby and a number of members went on a hugely successful short break to Amsterdam and the bulb fields in The Netherlands. In 2019 our intrepid travellers visited Vienna on some of the hottest days of the year enjoying a cultural city break.
The pandemic years affected us all but we managed to keep some form of meetings going and can now look back on a year of full meetings, with only one 'adverse weather' cancellation. Highlights have included speakers covering topics such as The night sky, Cleveland mountain rescue, St Catherine's Hospice, Animals in wartime and the Camphill Trust 'Botton Village’, and ‘planting’ a fabulous display of knitted/crocheted poppies around the war memorial, much admired by our village community. Last year 2023, we have had some fabulous meetings and have welcomed new members. Read our brief programme reports here, and visit us to see what our WI is all about!
